If you need to be a little more proactive, you can jump from one position on the Bridge to another and fully take over the tasks assigned to that position. As Captain, when you turn and look at the positions that don't have human players, you'd see a new list pop up for the things those positions would normally see on their consoles. When there are AI players involved, you have access to extra commands for guiding those AI. It's fine, there's actually a lot of flexibility here! If you're in this position, the biggest responsibility is keeping everyone else on the same page. This position gets information from Starfleet, and relays individual instructions to the rest of the Bridge based on that data. Captain's job is largely to coordinate between everyone else, and keep an eye on the mission objectives in the actual game part of this experience.
